"The Lost Battalion" to show at IWP Friday, April 24
Start: Friday, April 24, 2009 6:00 PMEnd: Friday, April 24, 2009
Please join us at the Institute on Friday, April 24 as IWP's Dr. John Tierney hosts the next film in our Movie Night series, "The Lost Battalion" (2001). The evening will begin with food and beverages at 6:00 p.m., followed by the film at 7:00 p.m.
As World War I draws to a close, former New York lawyer and Major Charles White Whittlesey is assigned by Gen. Robert Alexander to lead a battalion of American soldiers attached to the 77th American Division and penetrate deep into German-held French territory. Their objective was to advance quickly and smash the last of the German forces in the Argonne Forest and hold their position at whatever cost. However, the unit becomes surrounded by German troops and is pounded mercilessly for days, at times even by its own artillery. The film is based on a true story. Click here to view a trailer.
At the conclusion of the film, Dr. Tierney will lead a discussion of the film. Please RSVP if you plan to attend. We hope you will join us!
NOTES: After the war, Gen. John Pershing praised Maj. Whittlesey, calling him one of the three top American officers of the entire war. Also, IWP Trustee, Amb. Faith Whittlesey, is a relative of Maj. Whittlesey.
