Title: Director of Development

Reports to: Vice President of Institutional Advancement

Job Summary: 

The Director of Development develops and implements the fundraising plan based on existing and future funding priorities. The Director is responsible for developing long-term philanthropic relationships with donors, soliciting major donors for annual gifts, managing development staff, planning and coordinating strategic steps to reach financial goals, overseeing donor communications and managing development operations.

Job Duties:

  • Establish organizational fundraising goals and a fundraising plan to meet those goals
  • Work with president, executive vice president and vice president of Institutional Advancement as well other staff members to develop the best donor strategies for relationship-building and gift solicitation
  • Solicit major gifts in one-on-one meetings with donors or in conjunction with other staff members
  • Develop, execute and monitor direct mail and prospecting program
  • Effectively manage development team to ensure specific dollar and relationship-building goals are met
  • Monitor and measure the effectiveness of solicitations (both verbal and written)
  • Oversee a master communication calendar and track current, future and pending solicitations (direct mail) and relationship-building activity
  • Maintain a good working knowledge of the organization's programs and funding priorities
  • Ensure that all development systems operate efficiently and effectively

Skill Factors:

Education: BS/BA or equivalent experience

Experience: A minimum of 6 years of experience in direct major gift solicitation, or equivalent experience in strategic planning and persuasive communications; experience managing a development office

Communications: Highly developed communication skills; strong writing skills; ability to effectively communicate the organization's mission and specific program-related objectives

  • The ability to manage several employees and to work with others in the organization
  • Results-oriented with a bias for action and strong organizational and management skills
  • Good judgment and maturity
  • The ability to travel approximately 25% of the time
