IWP is pleased to welcome Dr. Sebastian Gorka as a new adjunct faculty member this spring.
Dr. Gorka, a longtime friend and guest lecturer at the Institute, is teaching a new class entitled "Al-Qaeda's Enemy Threat Doctrine" this semester.
This course analyzes in depth the context in which this politico-religious ideology was born, how it evolved, and the core texts that inform today's enemies of the United States. Students will become familiar with the worldview of the Salafi Jihadists typified by Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, understand their violent, non-violent, and indirect strategies, and allow them to formulate their version of the appropriate response to the current irregular threat environment. Students will also assess how well the U.S. Government understands this new foe and whether its response to date has been adequate.
"We look forward to understanding Al Qaeda's threat to the United States and why Al Qaeda continues to be a strategic threat, despite being at war for over a decade," observe students Brian Platt and Michael Webber, who are in the class this spring.
Dr. Sebastian Gorka is Military Affairs Fellow with the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and teaches counter-terrorism and irregular warfare to the US Special Forces and law enforcement communities. Since 9/11, he has trained over 1,500 counter-terrorism and intelligence officers from more than 50 nations including Iraq and Afghanistan, and has advised the US and NATO militaries at the three-star level. He is a former member of the British Territorial Army's Intelligence & Security Group (22 Coy) and lectures frequently on the strategy of al Qaeda at such institutions as US Special Operations Command, US Army Special Operations Command, the National Counter Terrorism Center, West Point, Fort Leavenworth's School of Advanced Military Studies, and the FBI.
Dr. Gorka has published more than 150 articles and monographs and is co-editor and author of Toward a Grand Strategy Against Terrorism (McGraw Hill, 2011). Dr Gorka recently testified to Congress on Ten Years On: The Evolution of the Terrorist Threat.
"I am absolutely delighted that Dr. Gorka will be joining us," IWP President John Lenczowski remarks. "He is offering a pathbreaking course, and he is one of the outstanding strategic thinkers in Washington."
