This course is designed to help students reach the Novice Low (ACTFL standards) level upon completion.

Students will be taught use the Chinese pronunciation system called Pinyin. They should be able to do basic daily communication in Chinese for work and life, for example greeting, self-introduction, ordering in a restaurant and describing one's hobbies. The contents involve daily life in China including common business expressions, social conversations and daily dialogues.

This course focuses on speaking and listening. Reading and writing Chinese characters will be introduced, though it will be brief and to the point. The basic knowledge of the Chinese characters in this course can help students build a foundation to reading Chinese characters for future intermediate Chinese study.
