Problems of Promoting Regime Change and Democracy

In exploring the role of regime-change and democracy in world politics, this course will focus on the relationship between the ideals and the reality of political intervention, the differences between rhetoric and action, and the relative value of different types of intervention, contrasting and comparing:

  • overt conflict, ranging from war to diplomacy
  • covert action (e.g., support through intelligence agencies and surrogates)
  • overt and deliberate support for actors who are themselves engaged in various forms of non-violent regime-change.
