Intelligence Collection

The study of intelligence begins with a focus on the gathering of foreign secret information: intelligence collection. This course is designed to familiarize the students with the nature, organization activities and key issues surrounding the variety of methods of intelligence and counterintelligence collection. This course is required for students enrolled in the M.A. in Strategic Intelligence Studies Program. It includes historical descriptions of the collection activities of the several "INTS" (HUMINT, IMINT, SIGINT, MASINT) and their role in American statecraft. The course explores significant policy issues (constitutional, legal, moral, ethical, organizational, strategic purpose, performance, and measures of effectiveness) related to intelligence collection in the U.S. experience. It provides a comprehensive overview of this key element of intelligence and the organizations and activities which carry out this function.
