The IWP internship program is an academic experience designed to introduce you to the fields of national security, intelligence, and international affairs. Interns have the opportunity to conduct research under one of our scholar-practitioners, attend lectures and seminars relevant to today's most pressing strategic affairs, pursue independent research on a topic of their choosing, audit our graduate-level courses free of charge, experience the sights and sounds of Washington, D.C., network with senior officials in the strategic community, and assist in the ongoing mission of The Institute of World Politics. Interns are encouraged to participate fully in the academic and professional pursuit of national security, intelligence, and international affairs. Rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, and recent graduates are eligible to apply. Click here for a more detailed description of the program and to learn how to apply.

"The Institute's superb curriculum and fine faculty, with excellent backgrounds in both government and the academic world, create a well-integrated program that produces professionals well-grounded in the real world of security and foreign affairs, and in the underlying history, principles, and ethical issues of statecraft."

- R. James Woolsey,
Former Director of Central Intelligence

"After I entered the intelligence community and completed advanced counterintelligence training, a seasoned instructor confided in me that I was distinguished as the most knowledgeable student of counterintelligence principles and history whom he had ever encountered in his multi-decade career as an instructor.

"My knowledge of all the instruments of statecraft has given me a distinct advantage over my colleagues in the intelligence community, as well as those in other agencies and departments with whom I work regularly - of whom many are competent in the technicalities of their work but possess only a tenuous understanding of the possibilities, limitations, and history of their respective functions. Consequently, my career and country are both benefitting."

U.S. Intelligence in the Cold War and Beyond

Secret intelligence is the "missing dimension" of Cold War history, as it is of most diplomatic history. This course analyzes a selective history of the U.S. intelligence community in the Cold War in order to assess its overall role. On the basis of declassified intelligence records and eyewitness accounts of former senior intelligence officers, the course focuses on what the intelligence community collected, knew, and estimated, and how intelligence reporting did or did not affect U.S. national security strategy and policy.
