National Security and International Affairs Internships in Washington, D.C.

The Institute of World Politics is one of the few graduate schools that offers internships designed specifically to prepare you for a career in national security and statecraft. Interns conduct research with IWP scholar-practitioners and are able to explore career options in national security, intelligence, and international affairs.

About IWP

The Institute of World Politics is a graduate school devoted to the study of statecraft, national security, intelligence, and international affairs.  The Institute was founded to fill a major national need: to supply professional education in statecraft, national security, intelligence and foreign policy that no other school offers. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to play a vital role in assisting with the Institute’s important mission.


About the Internship Program

Based in the heart of Washington, D.C., interns gain the advantage of professional and social networking with other interns from D.C. think tanks and academic institutions, in addition to IWP’s faculty.

IWP internships are offered during the fall, spring, and summer semesters.

Intern Responsibilities 

Professional Research

  • You will dive into the world of national security and international affairs by being paired with a faculty member where you will conduct research on captivating subjects like terrorism, cyber intelligence, and international diplomacy. 

Operational Support

  • Beyond your core research duties, you will play a pivotal role in our vibrant community. This may include actively contributing to the planning and execution of our dynamic public lecture series, crafting engaging content for our website, supporting the work of our academic library, or supporting the work of other critical departments at IWP. 

Internship Opportunities 

IWP Graduate Course/s – Free of Charge 

  • During their internship, every IWP intern may take up to 8 credits of IWP graduate courses free of charge – a $10,400 value. Those who complete the work and receive a minimum of a B+ will receive reserve credit at IWP if they choose to enroll in IWP after their internship.

  • Experience firsthand knowledge sharing and networking with our distinguished IWP faculty through our regular lunchtime discussions. Here, you will have the invaluable opportunity to inquire, seek guidance, and broaden your academic horizons.

Get Advice on Career Development

  • You will be given the opportunity to discuss your career and academic development with the Director of Career Services, Derrick Dortch, and the Director of Internship Programs, Melissa Juarbe-Pratt.
