Maximizing your VA Benefits
Navigating your educational benefits effectively is crucial for a successful academic journey. Here are some essential tips to help you maximize your VA benefits:
1. Register on Time and Submit Certification Paperwork
- Timely Registration: Registering promptly for courses that are required for your degree or certificate program is crucial.
- Certification Submission: Submit your certification paperwork via the electronic VA Certification Request form promptly after registering to initiate benefit processing.
2. Determine Your Enrollment Status
Your benefits are influenced by the number of units you enroll in and the duration of each class. Understanding your enrollment status helps in estimating benefits accurately.
3. Understand Your Responsibilities
You are responsible for any overpayments of benefits. Notify the Veterans Affairs Office immediately after registering for, dropping, or withdrawing from a class to prevent potential debts.
4. Taking Classes at Another Institution
If you plan to enroll concurrently at another institution, ensure courses align with your major and inform both institutions’ Veterans Offices to coordinate benefits appropriately. Email iwpregistrar@gmail.com with your academic plans related to using benefits.
5. Utilize Direct Deposit
Setting up a direct deposit for your benefits ensures timely payments and reduces the risk of lost or delayed checks. Contact the VA to provide your banking information for supplemental benefits. Contact the IWP Billing Department to provide your banking information via ACH Form.
6. Estimate Your Monthly Housing Allowance
Use tools like the GI Bill® Comparison Tool to estimate your Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) based on your enrollment and location. Enrollment in online or hybrid classes may affect your housing allowance. Typically, only 50% of the national average BAH is provided for such courses. Ensure you understand how your course selection impacts your benefits.
7. Ensure Courses Apply Toward Your Major
The VA authorizes payment only for courses required for your major. Taking unnecessary courses may result in non-coverage and potential overpayments. Refer to your degree requirements outlined in the Catalog and Student Handbook.
8. Determine Your Enrollment Status#
Your educational benefits are based on a combination of the number of credits taken within a semester, as well as the start/end date of each class. Please use the following list to determine your enrollment status.
