First IWP Movie Night featured ‘Tailspin’ and its real-life villain

Movie Night at IWP is a new series of events featuring movies and discussion on subjects related to the school’s statecraft and national security curriculum.

Some of the movies are well-known, others obscure. Some are serious, some just plain fun. All will be introduced or explained by one of our professors or noted guest speakers who will introduce the program and lead a duscussion afterward.

The first Movie Night is on Friday, April 8, 2005, featuring Tailspin, a docu-drama by HBO about the Soviet shootdown of a Korean jumbo jet in 1983, killing 269 people including a U.S. congressman. The villain in Tailspin is a young White House National Security Council officer in charge of Soviet affairs: a sinister character named John Lenczowski.

The event starts at 6:00 with a happy hour complete with beverages, light fare and good conversation. All are welcome: students, prospective students, family and friends.

Dr. Lenczowski will be our host, telling us how the movie was made and what really happened.
