Prof. Melady comments on ties with Pope John Paul II

APRIL 8, 2005 – IWP Senior Diplomat-in-Residence Thomas Melady has been on TV discussing the late Pope John Paul II, whom he knew as US Ambassador to the Vatican from 1989 to 1993. On Wednesday evening, he was on CNN with Wolf Blitzer. Immediately following the Pope’s death on April 2, Prof. Melady spent several hours as a commentator for Canada’s CTV, and appeared on the Fox News Channel‘s The Big Story with John Gibson, Fox and Friends, and Fox News Sunday.

He recounted to the Associated Press that Bush sent him to Rome with “a secret instruction” to press the pontiff to open diplomatic relations with Israel. When he raised it, John Paul seemed receptive and the Vatican established open relations with the Jewish state in 1993.
