IWP alumnus David Ernst discusses implications of cooperating with Iran against ISIS

In an article for the Federalist entitled “The Siren Call of the Shia,” David Ernst (IWP Class of 2014) challenges the idea that the United States should align with Iran in order to fight the Islamic State.

Mr. Ernst agrees with the President’s decision to exclude Assad from the United States’ plan for the region, and indicates that American policymakers must accurately evaluate the consequences that would come from working with Iran.

He argues that an alliance with Iran “would mark the transfer of power over one of the world’s most strategically important regions to an avowed enemy of Western interests.” Mr. Ernst notes that the U.S. may be unequipped to handle an Iranian hegemony in the Middle East, thus worsening the state of affairs in the region.
