Apocalypse Now?

The following article and book reviews by Prof. Bailey were published by World Affairs Journal

During the past two years, several books have been published that might collectively be characterized by the title of the movie based on Joseph Conrad’s novel The Heart of Darkness: APOCALYPSE NOW. They depict a seeming witches’ brew of economic stagnation or worse; chronic unemployment and underemployment; the spread of terrorism and organized criminal activity worldwide; endemic corruption almost everywhere; nuclear weapons development in North Korea and Iran; ethnic, religious, and class divisions; warlike posturing by China and Russia; increasing political polarization; and on and on. Before reviewing a selection of those books, however, tribute should be paid to another book published ten years ago that foreshadowed and predicted with uncanny accuracy what the world looks like now and that is reflected in the books we will be discussing.
