It was clear going into Turkey’s recent presidential elections that many in Washington were anticipating a victory for the Turkish opposition candidate, Kemal Kilicdaroglu of the Republican People’s Party (CHP). Those rooting for Kilicdaroglu were let down when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan prevailed, despite a struggling economy and the devastation caused by the February earthquake in southeast Turkey, convincing the electorate to give him one more term in office.
