Internship Experience

The internship that IWP provides is an incredibly unique learning experience that provides interns with vast opportunities to expand their knowledge of statecraft, robustly enhance their research skills, and gain valuable insight into the everyday workings of an office.

Interning at the Institute of World Politics has been an incredible whirlwind of exciting events and incredible learning experiences. From staffing an event on the Hill, to meeting foreign dignitaries and generals, IWP afforded me so many opportunities that interns anywhere else would have never been afforded.

The Institute of World Politics internship program is the most underrated, and best kept secret in the DMV area. Everyone in the District is searching for the “perfect internship experience.” Typically, that means an internship on the Hill, working for a member of Congress, but I knew I wanted something different.

The Institute of World Politics is an incredible institution that embodies everything a national security graduate program should. Majoring in Intelligence and National Security, the subject is something that I am very passionate about, and love to research. 

For the summer, I was able to work under Michelle Watson, Vice President for Corporate Relations for IWP and program manager for the Cyber Intelligence Initiative (CII). The program had just officially launched a week before I arrived, so I was able to help build it for future students and interns.

My time at IWP has been great. At the beginning of the internship, I had no idea what to expect, and my experience here has been more than I ever could have imagined. In my eight weeks at the Institute of World politics I looked forward to coming into the office every day. As an Events and Communications Intern, I assisted in the planning and execution of IWP’s events, as well as a variety of long-term communications projects.

There is a unique and exciting atmosphere at IWP. I had just finished another internship and was expecting to do the monotonous, “intern required” tasks that I had done before, but I was ecstatic to realize that this wasn’t the case.

My internship at IWP has been a fantastic experience and an opportunity for which I will be forever grateful. I met and learned from so many great people over the course of this summer and appreciate how each one has contributed to making this internship meaningful for me.
