IWP 643
One credit
This seminar is intended to introduce students to conventions of academic writing, including rhetorical strategies, paragraph design, and sentence structure. Its objective is to familiarize students with the writing process and to provide students with strategies for developing graduate-level writing products.
This class takes a studio approach, which is grounded in the idea that students use their own writing as a basis for learning. It encourages students to apply writing concepts and principles to practice (often through in-class writing, self-critique, and peer review) and assists students to build a repertoire of writing skills. Students may be required to take this seminar under certain conditions: their native language is not English, their writing is not deemed satisfactory by IWP professors, or the Admissions Committee requires it as a condition of admission.
