Military Intelligence in Modern Warfare examines and assesses the roles, importance, and failures of military intelligence in modern warfare. The course is designed to familiarize students with key sources, components, methods, and illustrative cases of modern military intelligence, from both the U.S. and foreign perspectives and approaches at the tactical, operational, and strategic echelons, and illustrates the importance of military intelligence in the development and execution of national security policy.
Students will discover how military intelligence functions in both peacetime and conflict and will have the opportunity to learn about intelligence successes as well as failures and how military intelligence has evolved and improved as a result.
The class begins with a historical look at military intelligence and progresses with weekly discussions about contemporary military intelligence issues confronting national security decision-makers today, providing an overview of military intelligence using doctrine and recent case studies to illustrate the importance, role, effectiveness, successes, and errors of military intelligence. The course primarily focuses on modern U.S. Military Intelligence and key issues connected with it at the strategic (national) and operational (theater) levels, with a short introduction to tactical intelligence as it pertains to achieving strategic effects on the battlefield. It concludes with an assessment of the evolving role of military intelligence in 21st Century warfare.
The course will spend some time delving through actual lessons learned, and students will learn through a combination of textbooks, case studies, and government publications. By the completion of the term, students will have informed views about issues pertaining to the military intelligence during the coming decades.
