About the Lecture

In recent years, the United States homeland has seen an increased threat from domestic terrorism and extremism. Addressing this unique threat requires utilizing new tools to supplement law enforcement. Deradicalization programs may be one of these tools. Such programs’ goals are to disengage radicalized or radicalizing individuals from acting violently and slowly pull that individual’s mindset toward a less extreme state. While these programs have been in place in Europe for many years, development in the United States is in its infancy. In this lecture, we will review psychological theories of radicalization and deradicalization, describe existing deradicalization programs in Europe, and address suggestions for development of deradicalization programs in the United States.
