Machine Gun Preacher is more than a heartening story of a sinner who found Jesus and defended Africans in Southern Sudan–children in particular–from the notorious Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony and his so-called “Lord’s Resistance Army.” The film also demonstrates the strong and positive impact that strong religious convictions can exert on both the individual and society. Furthermore, Pastor Sam Childers’ courageous fight against evil shows how one man can make a difference, even in the field of genocide/democide prevention with which national governments and international organizations struggle with only limited success. For the Machine Gun Preacher, “responsibility to protect” was not an abstract international relations doctrine, but simply the natural result of his obligations as a faithful Christian and a decent human being.
