About the Lecture: One of the most restricted and secretive countries in the world, North Korea represents a unique challenge to the Intelligence Community, particularly when it comes to traditional espionage, i.e. HUMINT. The North Korean target presents a number of cultural and psychological challenges given the harsh nature of the regime creating a near impenetrable operational environment. In this presentation, Ms. Won will first discuss the psychological makeup of the North Korean human target – keying in on the closed state’s singularly unique ideology known as Juche and their Suryong based political system as well as the identifying the cultural aspects which make the North Korean target unique, even when viewed within the context of the more traditional East Asian milieu.
About the Speaker: Jihyun (Amanda) Won holds a M.P.S. in Arts and Cultural Management from the Pratt Institute in New York and a MA in Government (with a specialization in Security Studies) from Johns Hopkins University. Her professional experience includes having worked in both the NGO and government sectors, serving as a legislative assistant at the New York City Council and as a Diplomatic & Consular Affairs and Partnership intern at the New York City Mayor’s Office for International Affairs. She has also worked at the U.S. Committee for Human Rights in North Korea (HRNK) where she was a contributor to that organization’s publication, The Parallel Gulag: North Korea’s “An-Jeon-Bu” Prison Camps.
