About the Speaker

Luis Rivas has more than 30 years of experience in the financial sector. He has held top management positions in international banks operating in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. He led multitask teams to design, plan, and execute business strategies, establish policies and procedures, and maintain and foster relationships with stakeholders.

Prior to his career in banking, Luis worked in central banking and treasury in his home country. He led high-level policy teams in designing and negotiating the structural reforms necessary to obtain debt forgiveness with multilateral, bilateral and private creditors.

At the beginning of his career, after obtaining his Ph.D. from Cornell University, Luis taught at Vanderbilt University. His research work was published in peer-reviewed journals and books.

Luis participates in several boards and collaborates in different forums. Currently, he is part of the Advisory Board of the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Latin American Program and is a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Inter-American Dialogue.

Luis is married and has 5 children. He resides with his family in Virginia.
