About the seminar: This virtual seminar provides a foundational understanding of Artificial Intelligence in the context of national security, its incredible potential for good, its technical and societal perils, and policy considerations for preparing for what may prove to be the most disruptive technological development of this century. Through numerous examples, the participant will learn what it is, what it isn’t, how it is being developed in the Department of Defense (JAIC, Project Maven, the services) followed by a comparison to China’s enormous efforts. The second half of the seminar delves into key policy issues, including predicting unintended consequences, assessing vulnerabilities and countermeasures, and concluding with a discussion of ethics and the technical challenges of creating ethical AI. The seminar presents the non-technical participant with an accurate understanding of AI and provides an AI practitioner with a broad perspective that they wouldn’t otherwise have.

About the instructor: Fritz Barth is a former career Marine Corps intelligence officer with over 35 years of experience in military intelligence and the Intelligence Community and currently supports the Office of the Undersecretary of Intelligence and Security (OUSD(I&S)). His combat experience includes tours in Somalia and Iraq. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and graduated from IWP with honors in 2006 as the first Marine to obtain a Master’s degree there.
