Joshua FivesonLTJG Joshua C. Fiveson is a Navy Fellow at The Institute of World Politics for the 2015-16 school year.

Joshua is an alumnus of Harvard Law School and an officer in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps. At Harvard, Joshua was a Graduate Student Leadership Institute fellow and an editor with both the International Law Journal and the National Security Law Journal. He has worked extensively with the United States Department of Justice — in both their Office of International Affairs and their Counter-Terrorism Section — and has regularly served as a guest speaker at George Mason University’s Criminology, Law, and Society Department. Even more, his writing has been featured in national outlets such as Foreign Policy, The National Interest,, the Harvard Kennedy School Review, and the Harvard Negotiation Law Review.

Currently, Joshua is on an active duty deferral to serve as an Attorney Advisor to Judge Kevin Ohlson at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. Joshua also serves as the co-director of J.D. operations for Service to School, a non-profit that provides free admissions consulting to U.S. military service-members, both active and retired, who would like to pursue higher education.

At IWP, Joshua is focusing his research on the intersection of constitutional and international law — specifically, as it bears on U.S. foreign policy and counter-terrorism strategy.
