In March 2020, Congress passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act). Under the Act, the Department of Education distributed relief funds to higher education institutions, including IWP. At least 50% of the funds were designated for emergency financial aid grants to students who faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The Department of Education requires institutions to post the information about the program on their websites.
1. An acknowledgement that the institution signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used, or intends to use, no less than 50 percent of the funds received under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students.
IWP signed and returned the Certification and Agreement to the Department and intends to use no less than 50% of the funds to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students. The distributions are termed IWP CARES Grants.
2. The total amount of funds that the institution will receive or has received from the Department pursuant to the institution’s Certification and Agreement for Emergency Financial Aid Grants to Students.
IWP received a total of $37,536 and intends to use at least $18,768 for IWP CARES Grants.
3. The total amount of Emergency Financial Aid Grants distributed to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act as of the date of submission (i.e., as of the 30-day Report and every 45 days thereafter).
As of June 23, 2020, IWP has distributed $13,500 as IWP CARES Grants to students.
4. The estimated total number of students at the institution eligible to participate in programs under Section 484 in Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and thus eligible to receive Emergency Financial Aid Grants to students under Section 18004(a)(1) of the CARES Act.
IWP’s total student enrollment is approximately 185. Approximately, 177 students completed FAFSA forms for the 2019-2020 school year. We lack data on the number of students who may have faced financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic.

IWP has informed all students about the availability of IWP CARES Grants and the application process. Requests from interested students are reviewed by an IWP CARES Grant Committee consisting of 6 senior administrators. The Committee determines, on a nondiscriminatory basis, who will receive grants and in what amounts. Highest priority goes to students facing hardship in meeting housing and food costs. Other areas for support include utilities, family care, and education expenses such as technology, fees, and books.
7. Any instructions, directions, or guidance provided by the institution to students concerning the Emergency Financial Aid Grants.
- On May 7, 2020, IWP issued a notice to all students explaining the program; how to apply for a grant; and how IWP will process the requests.
- The IWP Cares Grant Committee consulted by electronic means, reviewed all applications already submitted, made a preliminary determination to award a grant to each student who had requested support in the amount of $1500.
- On June 2, 2020, IWP contacted each student who had applied for a grant. Each student was asked to complete a simple online form, to confirm their current contact information, and to indicate whether they preferred payment via a paper check or an ACH transfer.
