The IWP Internship Experience: Silas McClung

Silas McClung

As an Events and Communications Intern at The Institute of World Politics, I knew my job would be to tell IWP’s story, but I did not think the biggest impact would be on mine. IWP’s uniquely mission-driven purpose developed my operational experience and leadership capabilities by instilling in me a sound understanding of international realities and the ethical conduct of statecraft. Throughout my time at the Institute, I discovered that my responsibilities went beyond merely conveying information; they were about crafting narratives that connected people with a shared vision for a better America and world.

Since day one, I received meaningful assignments from the Institute staff, who equipped me with the tools to tackle the monthly newsletters, press releases, and ambassador visits. This summer, I have assisted with coordinating 20 events, helped compose 17 news publications, edited 12 newsletters, captioned nine videos, sat in on two graduate-level courses, and conducted an alumni impact project on 538 graduates. Interning at IWP has truly exposed me to the day-to-day workings of life in national security, intelligence, and international affairs careers.

One of my favorite parts about the internship is how friendly, fun, and caring the faculty, students, and staff are at the Institute. From everyone greeting me by name to free lecture lunches and weekly mentoring sessions, the IWP community is the best in the Beltway, bar none. I am incredibly grateful to The Institute of World Politics for providing an exceptional experience and cannot more highly recommend this Events and Communications internship.
