The IWP Internship Experience: Peter Connelly

Background

I am a cadet in the US Army and an International Relations Major and Counterterrorism Minor. The Institute of World Politics has proven to be an incredible place to grow in both of those areas.

The Institution

The Institute of World Politics boasts a reputation as a graduate school devoted to the study of statecraft, national security, intelligence, and international affairs. Working as an intern at the Institute under the head of the internship, Melissa Juarbe-Pratt, my expectations were not only met but exceeded by the quality of work and research I was able to partake in. IWP provides an opportunity to meet with world-class leaders in the foreign policy and domestic security realm as well as learn from interns of the highest caliber from across the globe.

Research

I was honored to work with Dr. Christopher C. Harmon and Dr. James Robbins in researching Al-Qaida and its foundational documents. Dr. Robbins welcomed me to the institution and gave incredibly insightful help into the research and publication process that drove much of the work I would delve into during my short but impactful time at IWP. Dr. Harmon provided me with a foundational framework and tools for the project before allowing me to sculpt real-world research into something I am truly passionate about. This dynamic of equipping students with tools for studies and for life is what IWP does in spades.

Professional Growth

By far the greatest aspect of The Institute of World Politics and the intern program is the community. I have learned so much from people who I know will go on to change this world for the better, people driven by virtue and inspired by a common and eternal purpose.
