The IWP Internship Experience: Brian Ellis

As an undergraduate student pursuing a B.A. in International Studies, I craved an environment that would integrate my studies into the real world. The Institute of World Politics was able to provide me with this space. The learning environment has induced in me a confidence no other experience could have.

I now look forward to returning to UNC Wilmington with a higher understanding of informed patriotism, diplomacy, and strategy that my undergrad courses touch on. Most thrilling was being able to listen in on Dr. John Lenczowski through visits, career workshops, and lectures within IWPO 627 Statecraft, International Affairs and Integrated Strategy. This opportunity set in stone what IWP is all about: expertise from experience. It was an honor to listen, learn, and intern with some of the nation’s brightest minds in foreign policy, grand strategy, intelligence, and national security.

As a Research Intern, I was able to be paired with two faculty members. Meeting weekly with Dr. Callahan and providing assistance for a book proposal, working on various chapters and components for his development of Germany and the World: From Merkle to the War in Ukraine and Beyond allowed me insight into German foreign policy and further analysis of the strategy of our allies and adversaries.

I was also honored to work for Dr. Bradley, assisting with her research on the political economy of the family, gender wage gaps, and implications of policy. This work has been eye-opening. Although still developing, I have been able to gain valuable insight into the importance of strong economies, and the security that lies therein.

All in all, these experiences would not be possible without a well-functioning Internship program. In a beautiful addition to my undergraduate studies, this summer internship has laid the groundwork for a successful career. I look forward to having the upper hand in these concepts as I return to UNCW!
