I have had the distinct pleasure of spending the past summer as a research intern at The Institute of World Politics. Despite the brief and somewhat unexpected nature of my time at IWP, the experience far surpassed my expectations in every regard. I joined the program during its eighth week when Missy Pratt kindly welcomed me when my original internship placement fell through. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunities that emerged from this transition, as she made my integration as a research intern both smooth and efficient.

During my time at IWP, I had the privilege of contributing to Dr. Callahan’s research on German nationalism. Initially, there were no plans to involve me in this project, but Dr. Callahan graciously included me as one of his research interns. This opportunity allowed me to delve deeply into the historical context and current perspectives on German national pride. Although I had no prior interest in German nationalism, I am leaving with a newfound appreciation and understanding of the subject, thanks to my work with Dr. Callahan.

Throughout my time at The Institute of World Politics, I attended numerous seminars, lectures, and events that I will cherish for years to come. One memorable experience was the tour of the Department of Justice, organized by Dr. Curt Klun. I was captivated by the artwork and the stories behind each piece, which enriched my understanding of the deep symbolism and effort involved. This experience further ignited my passion for advocating for justice within the United States.

Another notable opportunity was attending a NATO summit conference hosted by Foreign Policy magazine. On the eve of the official NATO Summit in Washington, D.C., the magazine organized a conference on transatlantic security and related forums. I had the chance to hear from distinguished figures, including U.S. Representatives, members of the European Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. Ambassador to Romania, General Chris Badia, and James D. Taiclet, among others. I was deeply appreciative of the opportunity to be in the presence of such influential individuals within the realm of foreign affairs and national security.

My time at IWP prompted me to critically examine my career and academic goals more than ever before. With that being said, I have also never felt more of an unparalleled level of support and understanding regarding my future aspirations. As I approach my final semesters at school, I am more motivated and determined to achieve my goals, a testament to the inspiration and guidance I received at IWP. I will always consider my internship experience at The Institute of World Politics as one of the most valuable of my life, and I look forward to returning next year.
