The IWP Internship Experience: Jake Voien

IWP Interns at the Pentagon

Throughout my time at IWP, I’ve been afforded many opportunities that have furthered the pursuit of my professional and intellectual goals. All the while, I made life-long friends that I hope to see down the line. Being surrounded by experts and like-minded individuals who are passionate about the same issues as I am has opened my eyes to the array of opportunities I can pursue in D.C.

One such expert I got to learn from was Dr. Wayne Schroeder, who was the former Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Resource Planning/Management). He guided me with two research projects that enhanced my understanding of IGOs (intergovernmental organizations) and the defense industry. The first research project was a study on the UN Security Council, in which I found that Russia utilizes it not for security ends but for its own interests. The second was a study that quantified Chinese military capabilities and their projection for future conflict. Throughout both projects, I was able to develop a professional and personal relationship with Dr. Schroeder that I won’t take for granted.

My favorite experience this summer was attending the Foreign Policy panel on the future of NATO. We had the privilege of hearing from Ambassadors, NATO Generals, and even lawmakers in Congress who were passionate about the organization. It further opened my eyes to the opportunities I can pursue in my career, both in NATO and government to ensure the success of the alliance. Beyond that, however, we were afforded many opportunities to learn from experts and tour government facilities that I wouldn’t have been afforded otherwise.

IWP has treated me well. I know that I will look back and see it as one of the first steps in my career.
