The IWP Internship Experience: Shalvi Kamble

Shalvi Kamble

When I joined IWP for the summer, I was looking for an opportunity that would immerse me in an environment where I could see the inner workings of international affairs in real life.

I’m happy to say that being an Events and Communications Intern has given me the opportunity this summer to truly see the different aspects of this field. Over my time here, I’ve had the opportunity to meet people who work in intelligence and national security and hear about their first-hand experiences over decades. This has given me a pointer to where I want to take my career next, opening my eyes to this vast field that, prior to this experience, I hadn’t realized all the applications of.

Some of my favorite events this summer were a discussion with women in national security and intelligence and hosting Ambassador Dina Kawar. I felt like both of these events helped me understand the work women specifically have done in this field and were truly inspiring.

As someone who is extremely new to this field, getting the chance to meet other women and connect professionally with people I can come back to as I continue to navigate my place in this field and how I can contribute to it was extremely rewarding.

There have been several events where I was able to network with a professional, whether that was the speaker or one of the attendees.

I hope to take these connections and my experience this summer to continue my interest in the field of international politics.

I also wanted to acknowledge that my growth within this program would not have been possible without the supportive environment fostered by the summer interns cohort, IWP faculty, and the Events team.

I feel like I am leaving IWP having gained learning experiences that will follow and guide me in my next steps to becoming a professional.
