The IWP Internship Experience: Sofia Najri

Sofia Najri

My summer at the Institute of World of Politics, as part of their Events Team, has truly been a most fulfilling internship. Since the first day, I have observed how this team performs with dedication, efficiency, and creativity. Being part of their team for the summer has been the greatest opportunity. I am excited to carry the skills I have learned and the experiences I gained into my studies and my future career.

One of the best aspects of the internship was how I was able to play different roles. On a Tuesday, I would maybe find myself behind the camera, taking pictures of a book lecture, while on Wednesday, I would switch gears and become a video processor. That Thursday, maybe I would find myself picking up catering and plating the food for a reception or a lunch lecture, all while also working registration and checking in all of the guests. All of these different experiences exposed me to a whole new set of technical skills, taught to me by the incredible events team.

On the creative side, my internship was equally thrilling. Some of the assignments ranged from rebranding business cards for podcasts to brainstorming ideas for merchandise for certain events. These projects helped me to express myself in a creative manner in a way that I haven’t been able to before while taking classes at university.

Some of the most memorable moments that this internship has been able to offer has been the exposure to members of the foreign service community. Meeting and interacting with important foreign and domestic dignitaries have definitely been a highlight of my time here at IWP, not just while working events but on the field trips organized by the Institute’s Internship program. I had the opportunity to meet the Swiss Ambassador, the Jordanian Ambassador, and many authors and experts in the fields of national security and intelligence. I was also able to enjoy tours of the Pentagon, the Department of Justice, and other institutions with my fellow interns, led by their respective professionals. I can say that my understanding of international affairs was much enriched by the knowledge and perspectives shared by these experts.

This internship left me with a lot of newfound respect for event planners and those associated with doing the same – particularly those associated with IWP. Any person who can juggle such demanding subtleties of coordination with grace and efficiency is truly remarkable. Not only did this experience equip me with a wide range of skills, but it also gave me a bigger appreciation for the art and science of coordinating events.

I am genuinely grateful to have been part of the IWP family, especially the events team family. To be a part of such a dynamic team and to contribute and learn from each and every member was a privilege.
