As a student of Business with a concentration in Finance at the University of Puerto Rico: Río Piedras Campus, and a proud member of the Puerto Rico Air National Guard, my internship at The Institute of World Politics (IWP) provided me with an invaluable opportunity to delve into graduate-level education in international affairs and national security. This experience not only confirmed my aspirations for further studies in this field but also exposed me to a level of academic and professional engagement unavailable in institutions back home. As someone aspiring to transition to active duty as a military officer, this education aligns perfectly with my career goals, and my time at IWP solidified my commitment to pursuing a master’s degree here.
During my internship, I had the privilege of engaging in a wide range of enriching activities. I practiced delivering intelligence briefings and contributed to discussions on global defense issues, focusing on developments involving U.S. adversaries. A particularly memorable experience was visiting government agencies, such as the State Department, where I participated in a diplomatic scenario simulation. This hands-on exposure gave me valuable insights into the complexities of international diplomacy and strategy.
Additionally, I had the honor of assisting Professor Susan Yoshihara with her academic work. This included proofreading her research on the human factors involved in U.S. military operations—specifically how the military engages with civilians during scenarios such as riots or refugee crises—and contributing to the bibliography for her upcoming book, Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) in U.S. Security Cooperation. The opportunity to provide feedback on her research reinforced my appreciation for the intersection of academia and real-world security challenges.
Finally, I participated in IWPO 627 International Relations, Statecraft, and Integrated Strategy, which deepened my understanding of the intricate strategies shaping international relations. The knowledge and skills I gained through this course, combined with the mentorship and inclusivity I experienced at IWP, have equipped me with the tools to excel in my aspirations for a career in national security.
My internship at IWP was more than an academic experience—it was a confirmation of my professional goals and a gateway to opportunities I am excited to pursue. I am deeply grateful for the chance to grow as both a scholar and a future military officer during my time at the Institute.
