The IWP Internship Experience: Synnøve Staff Johansen

Synnove Johansen

My time as a research assistant at The Institute of World Politics has been incredibly enriching, providing me with valuable knowledge and hands-on experience. As an international student interested in foreign affairs and diplomatic communication, it has been exciting to learn from top scholar-practitioners. Alongside other interns, I have developed a deeper understanding of the inner dynamics in the political capital of Washington D.C.

Being a research assistant has given me the opportunity to work with Dr. John Marshall Callahan on his book project about the future of German foreign policy. My role has been to assist with literature reviews, which included conducting research about Germany’s role in the EU and NATO, transatlantic relations, Germany’s political parties, as well as the country’s relation to the Global South. The project has allowed me to further research these topics that are relevant to my interests.

I enjoyed the opportunity I have had to engage in different roles. While primarily being a research intern, I have also contributed to the intern’s social media, engaged in a panel discussion, and participated in weekly briefings. Through this, I have developed a deeper understanding of different viewpoints and improved time management, critical thinking, and public speaking,

Choosing only one memorable experience is difficult. From a social aspect, I have generally enjoyed learning alongside an extremely intelligent, experienced, and driven internship cohort. It was exciting to visit different think tanks and federal buildings, including the Brookings Institution, the Capitol building, and the Department of Justice.  I especially enjoyed the IWP Gala at the Library of Congress.

I highly appreciate the work all staff have put in to create such a well-rounded internship program, which provides a valuable skillset for my future steps.
