As a senior at the University of Missouri, home of the nation’s first journalism school, I brought a strong tradition in critical thinking to my role as a Research Intern.
I began the internship with a clear and focused vision for a career in national security, motivated by IWP’s emphasis on leadership and real-world application. In addition to reinforcing my academic foundation and strengthening my professional credentials, the experience immersed me in a demanding, mission-driven environment that encouraged growth on both a professional and personal level.
I had the privilege of working under the mentorship of Professor Christine Balling, whose background as a former advisor to U.S. Southern Command (SOCSOUTH) and Senior Fellow for Latin American Affairs offered invaluable guidance that refined my ability to draw comparisons between historical and current cases, present structured arguments, and integrate real-world insights into my analysis.

The program was further enriched through lectures and site visits led by current and former professionals from across government institutions, including Capitol Hill, the Department of Defense, the Department of Justice, the Defense Intelligence Agency, and the Pentagon, as well as through a specialized workshop led by Jack Glore, a Senior Intelligence Analyst at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
I am especially grateful to the Internship Director, Ms. Missy Juarbe-Pratt, and Coordinator, Ms. Inna Osetrova, whose leadership and support ensured that we made the most of every opportunity the program offered.
Completing this internship has significantly advanced my preparation as a next-generation leader, committed to developing practical and innovative solutions to today’s international challenges.
