The IWP Internship Experience: Tyler McCord

My internship at The Institute of World Politics (IWP) was an enriching and transformative experience that significantly broadened my understanding of national security, intelligence, and international affairs. My primary goal for the internship was to deepen my knowledge of intelligence and national security, which I accomplished.

I was a Summer 2025 Research Intern. My Research Advisor was an IWP doctoral candidate who guided me and my group’s research in strategic competition in Africa. It was a valuable experience in learning from his professional and educational expertise. I also thoroughly enjoyed playing Diplomacy.

The IWP internship has strengthened my commitment to a career in intelligence and national security. By connecting theory with practice, it has clarified my academic and professional goals, particularly in research and intelligence analysis.

Although there were ups and downs during my studies — I sometimes felt confident and other times humbled — this experience showed me the value of being resilient and precise in research. I also appreciate everyone at IWP who helped shape me into who I am today and allowed me to pursue my true passions. Overall, I am very thankful for the internship. It has prepared me well for my future career and professional aspirations.
