I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to participate in this internship. Not only has it led to the advancement of professional skills and research capabilities, but it also has helped me form new friendships and an extraordinarily valuable network base. Additionally, this semester at IWP has solidified my passions in the national security arena and my interest in this institution as an option for graduate pursuits.
Our enriching weekly itinerary strengthened peer connections, provided us with networking opportunities, exposed us to an IWP graduate course that gave us the philosophical background of the American regime, exposed us to speakers in the field, and gave us the chance to hone our professional skills. Personally, I learned how to write a brief using the Bottom-Line-Up-Front method and how to present those briefs with confidence to others. I also improved my diplomacy skills with weekly wargaming led by current students, and I expanded my creativity by brainstorming and researching policy solutions. Whether I continue in this field or adjust to another, these skills are very important to have in modern times, and I am so thankful that this internship advanced these qualities in me.
Beyond skills that I have expanded from our time together, I have also learned very valuable lessons. I have found that communication truly is key, and thus, your word and reputation, especially in this city and career, is of great importance to maintain. Surprisingly, I also discovered that, even in competitive landscapes, people are still more than willing to help you if you reach out. Furthermore, curating the right questions is oftentimes just as important as finding the right answer. Finally, one takeaway I will carry with me is that I will always engage in conversations and network with individuals, even if I initially do not see how our careers or passions align, as sometimes those are the greatest connections to make.
