Thank you for the opportunity to serve as an intern this semester with The Institute of World Politics (IWP). Working with the IWP team has been a deeply rewarding experience. Having the chance to contribute to research, briefings, and the broader workflow of the institution has given me clear insight into the practical side of national security and foreign policy work.
One of the most valuable lessons I picked up was learning how to translate theoretical concepts into concrete tasks. Thanks to the mentorship of an IWP doctoral student, I was able to refine my approach to gathering open-source intelligence, drafting concise analytic memos, and preparing executive-style briefings. My interactions with an IWP M.A. student helped me sharpen my collaboration and communication skills—and reminded me that attention to citations is as important as the product itself. I also greatly appreciated the guidance of Missy and the support of the IWP staff; their willingness to engage with questions and offer feedback made me feel fully integrated in the team.
For future interns considering this opportunity, here are a few tips I’d pass along. First, be proactive: seek out meetings, ask for feedback early, and volunteer for tasks beyond your comfort zone. Second, adopt the “BLUF” (Bottom Line Up Front) format when preparing memos and briefings; clear, concise, and mission-oriented communication goes far. Third, build relationships: talk to fellow interns, research assistants, and staff; your network will be one of your greatest takeaways. Finally, reflect frequently: keep a short log each week of what you learned and what you’d like to improve; over time you’ll see your progress and be better prepared for more complex tasks.
Overall, my time at IWP has strengthened my commitment to pursuing meaningful work in national security and international relations. I leave this internship with greater confidence, sharper skills, and a stronger sense of purpose. I’m proud to have been part of such a professional, mission-driven environment, and I look forward to carrying forward the knowledge and relationships I’ve built into the next stage of my career.
Thank you again to everyone at IWP for your mentorship, support, and dedication.
