My internship at The Institute of World Politics as a research intern was a highly valuable and formative experience that strengthened both my analytical skills and my understanding of national security issues. Throughout the program, I was exposed to complex geopolitical topics and was expected to engage with them in a structured, professional manner. The emphasis on clear, concise communication—especially through briefing formats such as BLUF—pushed me to think critically about how to present information effectively. This experience significantly improved my ability to synthesize large amounts of information into actionable insights.
One of the most impactful aspects of the internship was the opportunity to explore real-world policy challenges, particularly in areas related to security, intelligence, and emerging technologies. My research on strategic chokepoints in advanced AI accelerator chips allowed me to connect theoretical knowledge from my academic background with practical policy implications. I also developed greater confidence in anticipating questions, defending my analysis, and adapting my arguments under pressure. The collaborative environment, along with feedback from mentors and peers, helped refine my reasoning and presentation skills.
Overall, the internship met and exceeded my expectations by providing a rigorous, graduate-level introduction to policy research and analysis. It not only reinforced my interest in pursuing a career in national security but also clarified the skills required to succeed in this field. While the program was demanding, it prepared me well for future academic and professional challenges. Moving forward, I feel more equipped to contribute meaningfully to policy discussions and to continue developing as a researcher and analyst.
