My time at The Institute of World Politics (IWP) this semester as a National Security Research Intern was an incredibly rewarding and formative experience. I had the opportunity to engage deeply with complex national security and foreign policy issues while contributing to meaningful research projects. The hands-on nature of the internship allowed me to strengthen my analytical thinking, research, and writing skills in a professional environment that emphasized both rigor and collaboration.
I am especially grateful for the guidance and mentorship of my research advisors, Cherish and Ella, who were a highlight of my experience. Their support, feedback, and willingness to invest time in my growth made a significant impact on both my confidence and the quality of my work. They created an environment where I felt comfortable asking questions and pushing myself intellectually, which made the experience all the more valuable.
I also truly appreciated the support of Missy, the program director, and Inna, the program coordinator, who were both incredibly kind and welcoming to the interns. Their dedication to creating a positive and supportive environment did not go unnoticed, and they played an important role in making the program such a great experience. For future students, I highly recommend taking initiative—whether that means asking for additional work, seeking feedback, or making the most of available opportunities—because it can greatly enhance what you gain from the program.
Overall, my experience at IWP solidified my interest in pursuing a career in foreign policy and national security. It deepened my understanding of global challenges while helping me grow both professionally and personally. I am very thankful for the opportunity to have been part of such a supportive and intellectually engaging environment, and I know the skills and relationships I developed will continue to benefit me in my future career.
