Being an Institutional Advancement Intern at The Institute of World Politics (IWP) has given me the opportunity to meet amazing people in the security sector, explore D.C., and get hands-on experience in the field.
We spoke with many security experts during panels and fireside chats, including Gray Matter Resources’ Griffin Murray, Diplomatic Studies Foundation’s Charlie Gilbert, and the State Department’s Ambassador David Hale. By asking questions to these professionals and many more, I was able to learn firsthand how I could fit into this sector.
Every Monday, we gave an intelligence or policy brief to IWP faculty or customers, in-person and online, and were given feedback on improvements we could make. We also got to experience a variety of war games and visit places in D.C. like the FBI building, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence hearing, the Supreme Court, and the Library of Congress.
Working with Sade Nixon at the Advancement Department has given me a glimpse into the work non-profits put into their donor databases and preparation for events. I attended many of those networking and lecture events as well.
The opportunities that this IWP internship has given me are unparalleled. The dedication, time, and input I’ve received from Missy, Inna, Sade, and faculty members have helped me improve my professional skills and prepare me for a career in security. Thank you so much!
