Dr. Chodakiewicz lectures in Poland and Lithuania

Dr. Chodakiewicz lectures in Poland and Lithuania (1)The holder of IWP’s Kościuszko Chair of Polish Studies – Prof. Marek Jan Chodakiewicz – has just completed his month-long (late May – late June) lecture circuit in Poland and Lithuania.

The series of lectures included the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius (Wilno), and the town of Ejszyszki, the site of a 1944 anti-communist action later misrepresented as a pogrom. Dr. Chodakiewicz, who wrote a book on the events in Ejszyszki, delivered a lecture entitled “Ejszyszki: The ‘pogrom’ that never was.”

Once in Poland Dr. Chodakiewicz spoke in many of the country’s main cities, including: Warsaw, Lublin, Białystok, Gdynia, Kielce, Gliwice, Opole, and Łódź. He also lectured at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland’s first university and one of the oldest in Europe and the world (est. 1364). The lectures addressed such diverse topics as: post-communism and freedom; the activities of the intelligence services; modern Polish history seen from the American perspective; Polish-Jewish relations; forging the elite: the American way; protecting national identity; and the future of Western Civilization.

Dr. Chodakiewicz also granted interviews to Polish media outlets, including the conservative Catholic daily, Nasz Dziennik [Our Daily], Idziemy [Moving Forward], Gość Niedzielny [The Sunday Guest], Uważam Rze [I Believe], and others. In an 11 June interview for Nasz Dziennik, for instance, he pointed out that President Obama owes Poles and Polish-Americans a serious apology due to his “Polish death camp” gaffe. The genesis of Obama’s perpetuation of this anti-Polish canard is the President’s embrace of post-modernist and pop-cultural paradigms. In addition, the remark demonstrates that Poland is not respected on the international stage, argued Dr. Chodakiewicz. That, in turn, is partly the fruit of the Polish-American community’s unwillingness to invest considerable resources in American politics, the presidential race in particular.
