This year marks the anniversary of two Russian revolutions of 1917 which became a turning point in Russian history, and orthography as well. On May 11, 1917, the statement on spelling reform was issued by the Orthographic Conference at the Russian Academy of Science. On May 17, the Ministry of Education proposed to introduce the reform at schools. On December 23, the People's Commissariat issued a decree on obligatory new spelling in schools, but the Council of People's Commissars approved the reform for the press on October 10, 1918. These historical activities determined the reform of Russian orthography.
