Amb. C. Boyden Gray discusses European Union politics

On Tuesday, June 14, 2011, Ambassador C. Boyden Gray spoke gave a lecture at IWP entitled “What the European Union Means to America: Impressions of an American Envoy.” He was introduced by Amb. Louise Oliver, who is a Distinguished Fellow at the Institute’s Center for Culture and Security

Amb. Gray painted a picture for his listeners of his experiences, good and bad, as Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy Diplomacy and Special Envoy for European Union Affairs.  He described the challenges of working in conjunction with different constituencies, including the State Department, NATO, and the military, especially when these groups have trouble communicating with one another.  He also reviewed the importance of informal communication in accomplishing strategic objectives for the United States.

He discussed the problem the economic crisis has caused in terms of funding joint international ventures.  He commented that the US and the EU could work better together on international financial issues.

Questions touched on the specifics of Amb. Gray’s challenges in working with other international groups, the effect of the economic downturn on international relations, and the challenges Russia poses to Eastern Europe.
