On Friday, July 8, author David Wise discussed his new book, Tiger Trap: America’s Secret Spy War with China with a packed audience at IWP.
Mr. Wise’s remarks gave the gathering an intriguing look into the high-stakes world of counterintelligence cases involving Chinese agents prosecuted in the United States, such as that of Dongfan “Greg” Chung, a California aerospace engineer who was found guilty of selling US secrets to China. When the FBI searched his home, investigators found 300,000 documents in the crawl space under his house, including plans for the space shuttle, the F-15 fighter, and the B-52 bomber.
He also discussed the case of Katrina Leung (aka Parlor Maid) who worked for the FBI while gathering intelligence for China, and an engineer who was suspected to have leaked American plans for the hydrogen bomb, among other things.
Questions from the audience covered topics such as to what extent Chinese spy agencies cooperate with North Korea, and whether there are any indications that China uses different countries as third parties to gather intelligence from the US.
