Professor Kelley shares “the story behind the story” of the Hanssen spy case

Brian Kelley receives award, February 2011On Friday, February 25, 2011, IWP Professor Brian Kelley, a retired CIA officer who knew and worked with the infamous spy Robert Hanssen, shared with IWP students, faculty, and friends the “story behind the story” of the investigation of this traitor. The event’s attendees represented almost every organization involved in the intelligence business in this country.

Using video clips taken of the arrest of Hanssen, along with salient clips from the movie Breach and from a 60 Minutes story which document the events leading to Hanssen’s arrest, Prof. Kelley walked the audience through the complex case of the bizarre traitor.

Kelley focused on Hanssen’s lack of operational tradecraft, coupled with salient investigative issues which took the investigation down the wrong path for many years. He also introduced numerous special guests who were former counterintelligence officials from the FBI and CIA who knew or played a role in the Hanssen case.  Several of these guests shared personal insights to the audience during the evening’s session.

A robust and lengthy question and answer session followed the formal presentation.  After the discussion, IWP President John Lenczowski presented Prof. Kelley with a special award recognizing him for his years of service to our nation.

The event was held in honor of IWP’s 1947 Club members, who support student scholarships at IWP.
