Introduction to the IWP Student Government Association

This spring, a Student Government Association (SGA) was launched at the Institute to facilitate communication between IWP students, faculty, and administration, and to promote the interests of the student body.

The SGA was formally introduced at IWP with elections at the end of the spring semester.  There was a great voter turnout.

Cushman Laurent, who was elected Chairman of SGA, and previously had served as the president of his house at boarding school, comments that, “I am very excited to be working with such wonderful fellow students – Nathaniel Thomas [Co-Chair], Kristen Beilman [Representative At-Large], B.D. [Representative At-Large], and Nancy Berthold [Continuing Education and Certificate Program Representative].”

The group is poised to meet four times each semester, and work in conjunction with its Advisory Council, which includes Faculty Chairman John Tierney, Director of Student Affairs Jason Johnsrud, and President John Lenczowski.

The biggest task of SGA right now involves laying the foundation for a permanent facet of IWP – writing the by-laws of the group, beginning to work with students and administration, and establishing itself as a part of life at IWP.

Other big focuses for SGA will include working to improve career services for IWP’s rapidly-growing student body, lobbying for a reading week between the end of classes and final exams (which will especially be helpful for those students who both have full time jobs and attend class), and streamlining the student services processes.  In addition, SGA will host a welcome back reception for IWP students at the beginning of September.

When asked about his motivation to be involved with SGA, Cushmand comments, “I love this school – and the school has given me so much that I feel it’s only right to give something back.   I look forward to working to improve the quality of life for students at IWP.  They are our greatest treasure.”

Many thanks to Cushman Laurent, Reagan Sims, and Josh Davis for making this happen for the Institute!
