This spring, a group of IWP students were selected to participate in an intensive, four-week program of tutorials in international relations, history and philosophy at the University of Oxford in England. This program, which will run from May 22-June 18, is a first for IWP and its students. Prof. Charles Smith, IWP’s Academic Dean and Professor of Politics and History, helped to launch IWP’s participation in this program, which is coordinated through the Washington International Studies Council.
Our students will study on the campus of New College, founded in 1379 and one of the oldest colleges of Oxford University. In addition to Prof. Smith, students will be accompanied by Prof. John J. Tierney, Jr., IWP’s Walter Kohler Professor of International Relations.
IWP student Cassandra Bales comments, “I’m really excited that the school has afforded me the opportunity cap off my IWP education with an incredible experience.”
Six students received scholarships for the program this year, with two more students selected to go as non-scholarship students: Cassandra Bales, Spencer Barrs, Kristen Beilman, Tim Coakley, Samantha Moyer, Michelle Roscitt, Michael Webber, and Benjamin Fricke. To be admitted for this program, students had to submit an application and an essay on why they wish to participate in the IWP-Oxford Study Abroad Program, their academic goals for the program, and how it would complement their current program of study at IWP. The students must also have been enrolled in one of IWP’s three M.A. programs, have a high GPA, and be in good academic standing.
Students will receive four academic credits toward their IWP degrees for completing the program.
Bon voyage!
