Major General John C. “JT” Thomson III, who was IWP’s first US Army War College Fellow in 2008-09, has been assigned to be Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.
He will take command of this unit — the largest at Fort Hood — in January 2016 from MG Michael A. Bills.
After completing his fellowship at IWP, then-Colonel Thomson took command of the 41st Fires Brigade, or “Railgunners,” at the unit’s garrison in Fort Hood, Texas. He then served as Director of the Chief’s Coordination Group (CCG) for the Chief of Staff of the Army at Headquarters, Department of the Army. After being stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado, where he was Deputy Commander for the 4th Infantry Division, he served as Commandant of Cadets at West Point.
He recently received his second star, and was promoted to the rank of Major General.
The Institute extends its warmest congratulations to its old friend.
