On October 27, 2016 a distinguished alumnus of IWP, Mr. Vangala Ram, Department of State Chair at the National Intelligence University, spoke on the topic of diplomacy and strategic influence, and how each relates to statecraft.
Mr. Ram made the point that, while state on state diplomatic relations are important to the conduct of foreign policy, and for good order in the global system, generally, nonetheless, diplomatic corps around the world need to appreciate the subtler aspects of statecraft. Those aspects which he felt are woefully underappreciated today are public diplomacy and strategic influence. In short, these two disciplines require an appreciation of the need in foreign policy for addressing a foreign audience and making one’s goals acceptable to this audience.
