On February 28, 2017, IWP hosted a debate on national security and immigration featuring panelists Alex Nowrasteh of Cato and Matthew J. O’Brien of FAIR, and moderated by Paul Coyer, a research professor at IWP. Mr. Nowrasteh argued, in loose terms, that immigration is beneficial for the American economy, and is congruent with American culture. Mr. O’Brien argued in the opposite fashion: however much or not immigrants can be counted to benefit the United States (for, Mr. O’Brien argued, it is only this that should form the relevant benchmark), the question of immigration lies strictly with the voting public. If one is illegal, then this is in direct confliction with the will of the country. The debate was rousing, intense, and enlightening.
